Description: This is a post-Incunable and is one of those very rare instances indeedwhere thesecond edition far out-values the first, which did notcontain all of his writings. This edition is exhaustivedue to newly discovered manuscripts, thus more valuable than the 1571 edition and far, far scarcer. It also has always far out-sold the actual First Edition because of this. This is the very rare folio of Jacob de Billius' (Jacques de Billy de Prunay) GREGORII NAZIANZENI COGNOMENTO THEOLOGI OPERA OMNIA QUAE EXTANT, or THE COMPLETE WORKS OF GREGORY OF NAZIANZEN, in both Latin and Greek. This is the definitive work which has collated ALL of the extant material concerning Gregory of Nazianzen which is still in use today thanks to Jacob Billus' Second Edition of 1583- this very rare book. Itis the 'go to' source forany and allNazianzen scholarship and has rarely come up for auction, unlikethe earlier and incomplete first edition. It truly is a magnificent work, the first complete, printed works of ST. GREGORY OF NAZIANZEN. Nazianzen (330-390), a Cappadocian Theologian, was a 4th century christian mystic and one of the fore-fathers of the Greek Church. He was a companion of St. Basil the Great who appointed him to his first bishopric. He later became Bishop of Constantinople. This is the much rarer and fuller, Second Edition by Iacobo Billio (Jacob Billius), printed in Paris in 1583. The book is a 14 inch folio in full, hand-tooled leather with a Gold Gilt decorated cover and gold gilt decorated, ribbed spine. The binding has been professionally restored with new endpapers and the book is printed on heavy rag paper. The book measures approximately 9 inches wide by around 13 4/5 inches high. The book is in GOOD++ to near VERY GOOD CONDITION with respect to grading antiquarian volumes and has heavy foxing andsome soilingthroughout as shown, and no missing pages, a few edge dings. Thereis a small tearing of the paper on the title page beneath the ex-libris stamp to the right of the publisher's large colophon which can only be seen from the verso, thus the last photo shows the small tearing. It only shows when the page is turned, thus is only mentioned for accuracy. Firm binding, 1,046 pages + 3. International sales pay $24.99 shipping to eBay hub.
