Description: This fine stampless folded letter was sent from Lynchburg Virginia (Campbell County) by Chiswell Dabney to a firm in New York City. In the letter Dabney is seeking assistance from the addressees to help him collect an outstanding debt owed him. Overall a nice piece of history. Dabney was born in Hanover County VA in 1791 and he died in Lynchburg in April 1865 shortly after the surrender of Confederate General Robert E Lee at Appomattox. Dabney practiced law in Lynchburg Campbell County but lived in Amherst County VA. He appears to have been the president of the Lynchburg branch 0f the Bank of Virginia from sometime around 1835 to around 1858. He was a very prominent citizen of the Lynchburg area. Overall this short letter is in fine condition. There is some minor toning and the FL has a light vertical file fold. This FL has a bold blue cancel of the common Lynchburg CDS with fleuron that was used during this period. Please email with any questions you may have as we will be happy to answer any and all.
