Description: PCGS authenticated and graded XF Details. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. The surfaces are smooth and the only notable contact marks are a few microscopic ticks visible only under magnification. A tick on the lower half of the Y in LIBERTY, another on the coronet over the left side of that E, and a thin nick close over the ribbon loop can help identify this cent. Bob Grellman noted in Col. Steve Ellsworth's sale "Not sure why the graders at PCGS see this as "Altered Surface" but the texture of the obverse die used for this variety is noticeably different from a "normal" die. The details on the portrait are always blunted and appear "altered" but they are not (same for the obverse of 1851 N-34 which used this die but mated with a different reverse)." EDS, die state a early. Fine die lapping lines show in the fields on the reverse, clearest at ERICA, and the fields on that side are slightly reflective. This is the discovery coin for the die variety. That discovery was made by Bob Grellman in 1984 while attributing a large group of cents for Jack Robinson.
