1877 NY State Senator DEMAS STRONG Signed Letter

Description: "PLEASE LOOK AT THE PHOTOS!" Very Good Condition. This is a letter that was to George W. Bungay (see bio below), which was collected by Bungay in an album of various letters that he obviously thought were important to keep. It is pasted down onto one of the pages in the album, and has been separated and trimmed in order to sell each of the letters and autographs separately; all are addressed to Mr. Bungay and were from his personal collection. LETTER: Dated Oct 1877 and signed by Demas Strong from the "Dispensary & Hospital", re crisis and need to have a meeting that evening. Clean & bright; page measures 5 x 8". Embossed logo with "Crystal Lake Mills" at top left (this was a high quality stationery printer in Conn). Hon. Strong of Brooklyn NY was a descendent of John Strong of Windsor CT. He was born in 1820. In 1864 he became a NY Senator for the 2nd district, preceded by Jesse C. Smith. NOTES: George Washington Bungay 1818-1892; born in Walsingham, England, he immigrated with his family to the U.S. in 1827 at age nine. He was a poet, jounalist, biographer, publisher and anti-slavery and temperance reformer. He wrote many civil war and political songs. In 1855 Bungay established a brief-lived newspaper in Ilion NY. His reform politics were reflected in the Independent's motto, "Independent in All Things, Neutral in Nothing". Following the newspaper's failure Bungay joined the editorial staff of Horace Greeley's NY Tribune, the best known and most influential newspaper of the day. Bungay acquired a reputation as a reform writer and worked with such famed writers as George Ripley, Charles A. Dana, Fanny Fern, and many others. He also enjoyed a successful career as a lyricist for Stephen Collins Foster and John Payne (Home Sweet Home), the most popular American composers of the 19th century. His poetical works include the epic poem "Nebraska" (1854), which chronicles the introduction of slavery in that state. HAPPY TO COMBINE SHIPPING
