Description: This is a gum card of Detroit Tiger catcher Charley "Boss" Schmidt, also known as "Boss" Smith, the starting catcher on the Tigers' team that won the American League pennant in 1907, 1908, and 1909. It was issued in 1909 by the John H. Dockman and Sons candy company of Baltimore, Maryland and distributed with the company's gum in their "Base Ball Gum" series. The reverse of the card states that it one of fifty players in the series, but there are only forty cards in the Dockman issue. The card was sent to PSA for authentication, grading and encapsulation. It was authenticated and given the grade of Poor 1 Mark (MK). The mark referenced in the grade is a pencil marking on the reverse at the bottom of the card, "E92", which is the Jefferson Burdick designation for this set. It was encapsulated by PSA and given the certification number of 74769692. Only thirty examples of this Boss Schmidt/Smith card have been encapsulated by PSA.
