Description: This is a 1937 City College of New York Microcosm yearbook. It is in very good condition. It features a graduation photo of Nobel prize winners Herbert Hauptmann (shown on page 47), Jerome Karfunkle (shown on page 50), and Arthur Kornberg, (shown on page 52). Wikipedia writes: Herbert Aaron Hauptman (February 14, 1917 – October 23, 2011)[2] was an American mathematician and Nobel laureate . He pioneered and developed a mathematical method that has changed the whole field of chemistry and opened a new era in research in determination of molecular structures of crystallized materials. Today, Hauptman's direct methods, which he continued to improve and refine, are routinely used to solve complicated structures. It was the application of this mathematical method to a wide variety of chemical structures that led the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to name Hauptman and Jerome Karl recipients of the 1985 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He graduated from the City College of New York (1937) and obtained an M.A. degree in mathematics from Columbia University in 1939. Jerome Karle (born Jerome Karfunkle; June 18, 1918 – June 6, 2013) was an American physical chemist. Jointly with Herbert A. Hauptman (see above) he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1985. Starting in 1943, after completing graduate studies, Karle worked on the Manhattan Project at the University of Chicago with his wife Dr. Isabella Karle, one of the youngest scientists and few women on the project. In 1944, they returned to the University of Michigan. Arthur Kornberg (March 3, 1918 – October 26, 2007) was an American biochemist who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1959 for the discovery of "the mechanisms in the biological synthesis of ribonucleic acid and deoxyribonucleic acid". Arthur Kornberg was educated first at Abraham Lincoln High School and then at City College of New York. . He received a B.Sc. in 1937, followed by a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Rochester in 1941. Kornberg had a mildly elevated level of bilirubin in his blood— and, while at medical school, he took a survey of fellow students to discover how common the condition was. The results were published in Kornberg's first research paper in 1942. The yearbook begins with photos of students and faculty taken at various campus locations. This is followed by 53 pages of individual photos of students. There are then photos of individual students from various departments: Fraternities come next, with photos and names of student members. Sports follows. The book: The yearbook is in very good/excellent condition. It is 12 1/4" tall and 9 1/4 " wide. Covers are brown cloth over boards. It is hardcover. Front cover shows "The Microcosm 1937". There are 169 pages, plus advertising. There are no loose or missing pages. There are no binding issues. There is no writing in the book, except for the signature of a previous owner, Edward M Gottschall.
