(NOTE: He succeeded in his FS endeavor; there is an article in the 1997 American Diplomacy journal article by retired FS officer J.E. Williams regarding a later career as a State Dept. interpreter.) 19 Letters, Parsons & Pittsburg KS: Jack Helmer, 1953-56. “…You will (I trust) be happy to learn that I have completely retrogressed in the matter of drinking, having thoroughly lost three past week-ends…the week-end of the 7th the boss and I went to Kansas City as the guests of a truck line, all expenses paid. Imagine our horror when we discovered that our host was a non-drinker! This so shook our nerves that we were forced to obtain a fifth of Scotch and retire to the hotel room and drink the whole fifth before we were sufficiently calmed down…” Funny, chatty and typed; in the railroad freight & transport business. 35 Letters, Tulsa OK & Dallas TX: J.M. Redway, 1952 – 1955. Very ‘smitten’ love letters, from a distant admirer, a bit desperate; generally over-the-top sentiments. The end: “…As for you marrying me I truly don’t believe you would ever be happy with such an arrangement. I remember so man of the things you expressed as not liking in me and besides as you once said what could I ever do for you? Monetarily I am much worse off than last year…” The final dying act seems to take a very long time, drawn out over a couple of years. 3 Letters, Ft. Bragg NC: 1955. Very secret. Even now I’m not supposed to breathe the name of the Agency, which is quite a farce, since everyone in Washington knows not only the name but what it does, and that it is full of the most neurotic kind of crackpots…” And much pithy social, educational, work-related news.
