Description: 1958 Offset Poster/Cartel Primer Festival de Teatro Puertorriqueño by Lorenzo Homar Following is the translation of the description from the University of Puerto Rico’s Museum of History, Anthropology, and Art website ************************************************************** Poster announcing the Primer Festival de Teatro Puertorriqueño en el Teatro Tapia. The title of all the plays to be presented are written across and form the body of the figure who has only one eye shared by two masks: one representing comedy and the other tragedy. The work is very impactful despite only three colors used; brown, red, and yellow. The Instituto de Cultura created the Programa de Fomento y Divulgación de las Artes Teatrales in 1956. Under this division, it supported theater and dance. The dramatist, Francisco Arriví, directed this program from 1956 through 1980 which took special interest in promoting national theater. In 1958, the Primer Festival de Teatro Puertorriqueño was organized with the purpose of creating a space to present the works of Puerto Rican dramatists. For each of these festivals, celebrated year after year, a seasonal poster was printed to promote it and other posters were created for the individual theatrical pieces. Almost all of the painters of that generation contributed to the creation of a theatrical poster for the festival. During his time in the Taller del Instituto, [Lorenzo] Homar designed 11 seasonal posters – from 1958 through 1967 and the one for the 1969 season, as well as, 1 poster for an individual theatrical piece and 5 for individual performances by Ballets de San Juan. ************************************************************** Dimensions: Image: 30 × 19 9/16 in.
