1967 Topps Punch-Outs Rico Carty, Joe Morgan Lou Brock McCovey, PSA 2 POP 1 (9+)

Description: 1967 Topps Punch-Outs Rico Carty CardPSA 2 DESCRIPTION: POP 1 at PSA 2 with nine graded higher. (There is no 9 or 10 of this card.) Rare offering of this oddball regional test issue. This tall card features "Team Captain" Rico Carty at the top, with a black and white photo, along with punch-out rows for six HOFers: Joe Morgan (early card), Lou Brock, Joe Torre, Willie McCovey, Ron Santo, and Juan Marichal. I'm not aware of a lineup card with more HOFers. How PSA grades these is a mystery and, frankly, nonsensical. This card is at least as clean and sharp as a PSA 6 from the same order (also in our store). The only difference between those two cards is that the bottom of this card does not have "hanging" perforated chads. But that's only because of where this card was situated in the three-card panel from which we personally removed it. That would suggest that no card in that position could grade high, which is absurd, of course. Anyway, this card is beautiful with a smooth surface and sharp edges and corners. Perhaps off-center left-to-right, if that's even a factor here. 1967 TOPPS PUNCH-OUTS: This set of game cards was a test issue, released regionally (possibly in Maryland and the Midwest). The front of each card, measuring 2.5 x 4.75 inches, features the names of several players, with a "Team Captain" at the top, with game instructions on the back. The game was played by two opposing players, each using a nine-player lineup card. The first player would punch out the first chad in the first player's row. The back of that chad revealed a code corresponding to a game event. "S.O." meant "Strikeout," "HR" meant "Home Run," etc. These codes were correlated with that's player's actual current statistics. Over 200 lineup variations were possible. PROVENANCE: I recently began assisting a local retired professional with his vast childhood collection of sports cards, sports memorabilia, books, and toys (partially shown in last pic). He kept nearly everything he acquired as a kid, including packaging ephemera. He personally pulled this card from a pack of 1967 Topps Punch-Outs, and he still has the wrapper it came out of. He arranged all his cards, mostly from 1966-1975, in neat stacks in shoe boxes--and they have been stored in a highly organized fashion just like that for 50+ years in smoke-free, climate-controlled homes. Remarkably, until we submitted this card for grading, it had never been inside any kind of sleeve. Never in a penny sleeve, never in a toploader, never in an album, never in a screwdown or one-touch. He also never attempted to sell his cards before now; they've never been handled at card shops, shows, or garage sales. A truly pack-fresh and high-grade vintage Topps card with one original owner.
