Description: Two Royal Arsenal Cooperative Society 3 shilling (or 3/-) tokens. These were produced early to mid 20th century and were an important part of British social and economic history. The tokens were given out as a dividend to coop customers and were later replaced by dividend books and then by stamps and could be exchanged for the many goods and services provided by the RACS. The RACS was subsumed into the national cooperative movement in the mid 1980's. The tokens were cheaply made mostly of thin tinplate and were struck one side only, the reverse being the impression left by striking the obverse. They were not intended for very heavy use. There will be traces of corrosion on them - see pics. At the time of issue the three shillings value would represent over an hour's wages for a casual worker. The last picture shows the reverses of the tokens. Many thanks for looking.
