The Day of Hungarian Culture, observed every year on January 22, celebrates the completion of Hymnus, Hungary's national anthem, by poet Ferenc Kölcsey in 1823. Before the anthem's creation, Hungary lacked an official national anthem, and Kölcsey’s work filled that cultural gap, establishing a central piece for Hungarian identity. Written in Szatmárcseke during a turbulent period marked by Austrian pressure on Hungary’s political autonomy, Hymnus became not just a poem but a symbol of national pride. The poem first appeared in 1829 in Károly Kisfaludy’s literary magazine Aurora, though it lacked the subtitle Kölcsey had included in the manuscript, “of the turbulent centuries of the Hungarian nation.” Later published with that subtitle in 1832, the piece became increasingly associated with national sentiments. In 1844, a competition was held to compose music for the poem, and Ferenc Erkel’s composition won, setting the poem to music. It debuted on July 2, 1844, in the National Theatre of Pest. Shortly after, on August 10, Hymnus was first performed before a wider audience at the launch of the Széchenyi steamboat at the Óbuda Shipyard. By the 1850s, Hymnus had become the more popular anthem, overshadowing Szózat, another patriotic poem, as it resonated more deeply with the Hungarian people. The anthem was officially recognized as a national symbol in 1989 and incorporated into Hungary’s Constitution. Article I of the Fundamental Law of Hungary, which came into effect on January 1, 2012, recognizes Hymnus as the national anthem of Hungary, a testament to its enduring cultural significance. Front: The front of the coin is a tribute to Ferenc Kölcsey, featuring a half-profile portrait inspired by Anton Einsle’s 1835 painting of the poet. This portrayal emerges from a divided background that hints at the poet's isolation during the writing of Hymnus in Szatmárcseke. Kölcsey's name is subtly incorporated into his attire, and a quill is included to symbolize his writing process. Beneath the portrait are the words "Hymnus" and "1823," marking the year the anthem was completed. To the right of the portrait is the inscription "MAGYARORSZÁG" (Hungary), and at the bottom left, the coin’s mint date "2023" and mint mark "BP." are inscribed. To the right, the denomination "15000 FORINT" is prominently featured, noting the coin's value. Back:The back of the coin displays a panoramic view of Hungary, symbolizing the vastness of the anthem's significance. A central triangle, representing the Holy Trinity, radiates three rays—emphasizing the sacred nature of Hymnus. Encircling the triangle is a quote from the anthem: "NYÚJTS FELÉJE VÉDŐ KART HA KÜZD ELLENSÉGGEL" ("Extend over it your guarding arm; During strife with its enemies"), reinforcing the protective and unifying spirit of the anthem. At the bottom of the panorama is Kölcsey's mausoleum in Szatmárcseke, where the poet rests. Surrounding it are iconic Hungarian landscapes, depicted in a clockwise arrangement: Tihany, Lake Balaton, Szigliget, Esztergom, the Danube Bend, Visegrád, Eger, Tokaj, and Szatmárcseke itself. This scenic representation underscores the connection between the anthem and Hungary’s rich cultural heritage. The designer's mark, sculptor E. Tamás Soltra, is cleverly integrated into the Tokaj landscape, symbolizing the artist’s contribution to the coin’s design. This commemorative coin not only marks the bicentennial of Hymnus but also celebrates the lasting cultural and historical importance of Kölcsey's work to the Hungarian nation. eBay Money Back Guarantee covered.
