Madeira is a type of embroidery that comes from a Portuguese Island southwest of Portugal. They call it Madeira Embroidery because the island is named Madeira and they have embroidery houses all over the island. For 100s of years the women on this island have taught their daughters handwork. These highly skilled embroidery & needlework techniques are known as Madeira. The women of Madeira have been creating the finest embroidery known since the early 1800's. They only use the finest of linen to embroider on... like organdy & Irish linen. They incorporate highly skilled handwork such as Broderie Anglaise Eyelet, Richelieu Cut Work & heavily padded satin stitches on their exquisite & expertly made textiles. Some of the larger, more ornate tablecloths were created by several embroideresses & still took months & sometimes years to finish. All authentic Madeira is made in MADEIRA Portugal.
