Description: Plot. Shakespeare probably obtained most of the facts with regard to Theseus and Hippolyta from the "Life of Theseus" in North's translation of Plutarch's Lives (1579). Much of the framework of the play is adapted from the Knightes Tale of Chaucer. The story of "Pyramus and Thisbe" was a familiar one to the Elizabethans. Shakespeare may have read it in Ovid's Metamorphoses or in the translation of that work done by Golding in 1565. Much of the fairy element in the play Shakespeare owes to popular tradition derived from Teutonic and classical mythology. The Date of the Play. External evidence points to the fact that A Midsummer Night's Dream was first acted in or before the year 1598, for in this year Meres makes mention of it in his Palladis Tamia, Wits Treasury. No other external evidence is to be found. Any further attempt to fix the date must be made by the help of internal evidence. In Act v. 1, 52, 53 mention is made of _ « The thrice three Muses mourning for the death Of, Learning, late deceased in beggary." Robert Greene, the novelist and dramatist, died in 1592 in beggary. In his pamphlet " Greenes Groatsworth of Wit bought with a Million of Repentance" he spoke as the representative of learning. This passage is therefore supposed to refer to his death. The expression "thrice three Muses" was probably suggested by Spenser's "Teares of the Muses" (published 1591), (from intro)
