Description: These lovely repousse metal angel or santo wings were purchased from a reputable dealer at the Santa Fe Ethnographic Show some years ago. The information provided at the time was that they came from Bolivia (known for their repousse work) & dated to the early 19th century. I can’t verify that information for sure, however, so please take a close look at the photos & use your own best judgment. I’ve never seen another pair quite like them in all my years of collecting devotional art. They measure about 15” long and just under 5” wide at the widest part of the wing. I’m not sure of the metal—they’re dull gold/brass colored but the metal beneath may be something else—and although if you look closely you can see that they were cut out by hand, the workmanship is quite beautiful, especially the deep repousse. They’re in very good vintage condition except for a small bend at the tip of one wing. Please see photos. The blue velvet ribbon is a bit bedraggled & fraying like crazy but it’s rather lovely too, in its way. As I understand it, these would’ve been fastened to the back of a santo or bulto carving. Please take a close look at the photos & use your own best judgment. Whatever their origin and history, they’re really beautiful and unusual.
