A beautiful statue with graceful sweeping lines demonstrating the exquisite skill of the carver, most notable in the robe on the back. While it is challenging to establish an exact age without C-14 analysis, the style and high quality has confidently identified the Buddha as mid-18th century or earlier. The bhumisparsha (earth-touching) mudra depicts the Buddha reaching down to touch the earth with his right hand, while his left hand rests in his lap. The mudra is one of the five common mudras in Buddhist iconography and practice, and among other things, represents enlightenment, connection to nature, dharma teaching, personal transformation, and overcoming obstacles.
