These two burial figures symbolize the attendants of princes, princesses, wealthy ministers, and distinguished nobles. They were intended to accompany these individuals in the afterlife, providing them with all the necessities and luxuries they enjoyed during their lives. Tomb attendants of clay began to be made by the third century B.C. The Han Dynasty produced countless ceramic funerary figures. By the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907), pottery and glazing techniques had advanced considerably. The eyes of these tomb maidens are closed, otherwise lively, and varied in designs, with hair dressed in distinctive coiffures, wearing cream-white robes, kneeling in a naturalistic service pose, one appears to be once holding a Biwa 琵琶, and the other a pan flute 排簫 (both instruments are missing).
