Description: This handsome double paper leaf Japanese fan, c. 1890s, has been pasted with paper monograms and clippings from England and Rome, suggesting that it served as a travel record of a European tour. Such "scrapbook" or "monogram" fans were popular crafts for young female college students at the turn of the 20th century. Locations mentioned include Cirencester, the Isle of Wight, and London, England, as well as Rome, Italy. Five cancelled stamps come from Italy, France, and Canada. Clippings also come from the "Embassy of the United States - Military Attaché" and the "Consul General of the United States of America, Rome." The double paper leaf has a scalloped top edge and a thin layer of black silk gauze applied to each side. The floral motif on the decorated side is hand painted in silver paint. The fan leaf is mounted on ten bamboo sticks that have been stained in a walnut color; the guard sticks are split into a V shape and attached to the leaves by crossed silk cords. The brass loop is missing its tassel. This is a large fan: 13" in length and 24 1/4" wide when fully opened. It is part of a large collection of antique Japanese fans given to us to sell for the benefit of our library. Very good condition. A little wear on guard leaves. Two scraps have corners turned up. Cords at bottom of the guard on the reverse are coming loose.
