Description: These pair English Naval Officer Epaulettes were found along side of those HUGE LOT of WW1 Post Card collection. If you look through Dads listings you will see a listing for over 670 WW1 (they are dated from 1914 to 1919, item number 326383306578. This would have been worn by a very HIGH RANKING BRITISH NAVAL OFFICER! As per the folks that have written to us. We have had a few knowledgeable Folks that have written to us and have told us they believe this is from 1901 to 1910. They sent this message that included this information, see the below in quotes, next paragraphs, dating the Kings post 1900. Most believe this was manufactured, purchased and used between 1901 to 1910 under the rule of King Edward VII and was most likely continued being used through at least the rule of King George from 1910-1936. The details they saw on the back of the Epaulettes also helped date these. “ BY THE APPOINTMENT OF THE KING”, referring to the Kings of England. Not the Queen of England which would have dated them from post 1936. The Metal braids are just another indicator of the dating. The undersides are still in outstanding condition for their age! Fully functional too! Edward VIIRuled from 1901 to 1910, Edward VII was the son of Queen Victoria, who died in 1901 after a reign of almost 64 years. Edward VII was the father of George V and grandfather of Edward VIII and George VI. George VRuled from 1910 to 1936, George V died in 1936 after being injected with a mixture of cocaine and We have filled the picture gallery so you can see every detail. They could use a bit of repair and anyone who is handy can make these look 100% better than they currently are. A bit of sewing and redoing those coils should be possible or trimming a bit would work? We just have no experience with these and do not want to even try. We are a HAT family and this is way out of our expertise! If anyone out there can help better identify these please write to us. These were inside that same wax paper envelope. The wax envelope just disintegrated when we took it out. We have no actual history on these but they are obvious British Naval Epaulettes. One of Dads collectors identified these for us, he was not 100% either though. We are not 100- certain if these were for the hat or the jacket shoulder inserts? You can see that there are those metal, what look like clamps? that get inserted and snapped down to hold them into position. Antique U.S. Naval Officer's Fore-and-Aft Hat Epaulettes. Pretty Well Preserved for as old as they are. We discovered that you will need to do a bit of untangling also. We have got them now separated, (we will update the pictures when my grandson comes over). It’s doable but with both our VERY OLD hands we did the best we could, without damaging them anymore. Note from collectors: this has become a bit confusing? Are these for bicorn hat or dress naval jackets? The following is what folks have written to us. Used on Naval Jackets to show status of Rank. “Presented is a beautiful Naval Bicorn hat and pair of epaulets, in extraordinarily condition for their age. The Cocked Hat was worn by officers with full dress uniforms commonly referred to as a “fore and aft” hat or bicorn. During the 1700’s the hat was worn parallel to the shoulders, but in the 1800’s was modified to be worn with the points to the front and back. Wearing of the Cocked Hat was discontinued on 12 October 1940 in the U.S. Navy.” Finding an example in like new condition is very rare. These are not pristine! NOTE: when we ship Dad’s hats out we use strong shipping boxes or well padded envelopes and each hat we ship is FULLY INSURED and we are no longer going to handle broken box insurance claims. We discovered that one buyer crushed their shipping box and asked for a hefty partial refund. The shipper sent us a picture of the box sitting at the front door and it was NOT CRUSHED? We also discovered that because we were NOT in possession of the box it was impossible for us to file the claim. So now and in the future all claims will be handled by the buyer of the hat or item we ship. Again we ALWAYS carefully pack each hat so it will not be crushed in a good strong shipping box. There are always some Bad Apples around who make everyone’s life impossible! It not fair to the rest of the GOOD FOLKS but it’s a fact of life these days! If you have any questions please write to us. Thank you for your understanding.
