The first four machines were involved in certification tests - the type received a limited airworthiness certificate in May 1959, and the full type certificates in the UK and the USA were obtained in December 1960. The fourth aircraft built was the first Argosy shown to the general public at the 1959 Paris Air Show.In October 1959, a demonstration tour of Europe took place - the plane aroused great interest. The first customer was Riddle Airlines (Miami, USA), which purchased four aircraft in February 1959 for cargo transportation under contracts with the US Air Force. She later bought three more cars. All seven Riddle Airlines Argosy were also operated in the United States by Capitol Airlines and Zantop Air Transport."British European Airways received the first of three ordered Argosy 102s in 1961 and began service in December, replacing the Douglas DC-3 and Avro York. 10 Argosy Series 100 aircraft were built and all but the third were delivered to USA (at least four planes later returned to the UK).The operation of the Argosy aircraft by BEA proved to be economically disadvantageous, and by April 1970 they were decommissioned.
