Metcalf excelled as a portraitist and also worked as a still life painter, miniaturist and silhouette painter. Experts have noted that his painting has a harshness, linearity and a strong naive spirit, despite acquiring greater professionalism from 1820. What really inserted him into America's art world was his trip to the Caribbean and the work he did in some of its countries, including Cuba. In 1824 he settled in Havana and lived there until his death from cholera in 1834. Currently, four paintings by Metcalf can be appreciated at the National Museum of Fine Arts of Cuba.ELIAB METCALFE.
