Frans Decker (1684) The Birth of Saint John the Baptist. Rare Old Master Oil.

Description: Frans Decker (Dutch, 1684 – 1751) The Birth of Saint John the Baptist Dimensions: 19 x 16 inches without frame. 25 ½ x 22 ½ inches with frame. Description: Oil on canvas. Signed to the lower left, F. Decker. Age: Ca, 1730-1750. Outstanding old master oil with depiction of the birth and naming of Saint John the Baptist. The scene is described in Luke 1:5-80. In which Zacharias and his wife, Elizabeth, are too old to have children. One day the angel Gabriel appears to tell Zacharias that he and Elizabeth will have a son named John. Zacharias is literally dumbfounded and loses his ability to speak. Later, the baby is born and all the couple's neighbors and midwives insist that the baby should be named Zacharias, after his father. Elizabeth disagrees, so they ask for Zacharias's opinion. He writes on a tablet “His name is John” and regains his ability to speak. Thus Saint John the Baptist begins his miraculous life. The miracle, significance and implications of John’s birth are brilliantly presented in this tender scene. The miracle of John’s birth is indicated by the elderly Elizabeth – who gave birth “in her old age” – being served in bed by attendants as the elderly Zechariah, on the left side of the painting, writes the name John on a tablet. There are a number of symbolic details in the scene: The shadow of the snake seen above the jug of wine refers to the legend that John was given a cup of poisoned wine that he drank without harm. Symbolizing the Christian faith prevailing over death. The dog on the left corner of the painting represents faithfulness. It is most likely a symbol of John’s faithfulness to his calling as a prophet, which culminated in his martyrdom. An rare and fine oil by the Dutch painter, Frans Decker ( 1684 – 1751) A certificate of authenticity will be included with this work. Frans Decker (1684) The Birth of Saint John the Baptist. He is stated to have been born at Haarlem in 1684, and to have died at the same place in 1751, having been a pupil of Romeyn De Hooghe and of Bartholomeus Engels. He painted landscapes in a very pleasing and natural style, resembling the charming productions of Ruisdael, but without the servility of an imitator. He also excelled in caricature.                                                 Shipping fees: United States/ Canada: 45 dollars. ( delivery time: About 3 - 5 working days.)
