Fred Sandback (August 29, 1943 - June 23, 2003) was an American conceptual minimalist-based sculptor known for his thread sculptures, drawings and prints. His estate is represented by David Zwirner, New York. Frederick Lane Sandback was born in Bronxville, New York, where, as a young man, he made banjos and dulcimers. He received a BA in philosophy from Yale University (BA, 1966) before studying sculpture at the Yale School of Art (MFA, 1969), where he studied with, among others, visiting professors Donald Judd and Robert Morris. Sandback is known primarily for his minimalist works made with colored thread. The artist's early interest in stringed musical instruments led him to make dulcimers and banjos as a teenager. In 1967, he made the sculpture that would set the terms for his mature work. Using string and wire, he outlined the shape of a 20-foot-long 2-by-4 board lying on the floor. Although early in his career he employed metal wire and bungee cord, the artist soon dispensed with mass and weight by using acrylic thread. His sculptures of thread, bungee cord and wire define edges of virtual forms that ask the viewer's brain to perceive the rest of the form. In this way, his work can be considered visionary or imaginative, as well as minimal and literal. In fact, Sandback was fond of installing "corner" pieces whose shadows aid in this process of completing the form. In describing his work he stated, "It is a consequence of wanting the volume of sculpture without the opaque mass that the lines have" and "However, from the beginning I had a strong gut feeling, which was to want to make a sculpture that had no interior." Sandback himself referred to his sculptures operating in pedestrian space, recognizing both the movement of the viewer through a space as something to actively engage with.
