Description: This is the signature of Frederic William Austin (1872-1952), an English baritone singer, music teacher, and composer of the early decades ofthe 20th century. Austin is perhaps best known for his arrangement of Johann Pepusch's music for a 1920 production of The Beggar's Opera by John Gay, and for his popularization of the melody of The Twelve Days of Christmas. Austin was the older brother of the composer Ernest Austin (1874–1947). Austin was best known in his lifetime for his singing, but he was also a notable composer. In 1922 he became artistic director of the British National Opera Company. In 1923 he was elected a member of the Royal Philharmonic Society. In this way, and through his teaching,he continued to train and encourage English singers for many more years. Austin composed much theatre incidental music, notably for The Knight of the Burning Pestle (1923), Congreve's The Way of the World (1924), John Drinkwater's Robert Burns (1925), Vallombrossa (1926), and Prudence (1931). Austin wrote a cello sonata in 1927. He wrote a concertino for piano, strings, harp, and percussion in 1944. He composed the music for the Ealing Studios film Undercover (1943), and for the movie Midshipman Easy (1935). Frederic Austin died in a hospital in the Kensington area of London on 10 April 1952, aged 80. The signature is clipped from a letter. It comes with a certificate of authenticity from JG Autographs.
