Description: French First Empire Era Antique Pair Candle Holders Italian Red Marble & Spelter Description Antique pair of decorative candle holders made in France at the beginning of the nineteen Century. The slightly rectangular base of these pieces was made of red marble acquired from Italy during the Napoleonic wars. The Spelter cups and ornamental decorations have a matte patina resembling Bronze. These loose cups are not attached to the base by design. The metal feet are applied to the marble base. Each piece measures 14 1/4 inches high. The marble base measures 5 1/2 inches long and 4 inches wide, but the feet extend a little farther out. These candle holders come from a provincial mas in the South West of France. (Bordeaux area). Generally, they are in pretty good condition for their age, but there are a couple of issues to note: one of them has a crack on each side of the marble ring at the base of the cup, while the other one has a small chip in its marble ring at the base of the metal cup. Look at all the pictures showing those issues. The cylindrical screws are original early 19th century. These candle holders are heavy: 14 pounds unpacked.
