Grateful Dead Live 2CD 10-12-68 Avalon Ballroom + FW Bonus 8-21-68, 2-28-69

Description: Grateful Dead live 2-CDs10/12/68 Avalon Ballroom w/Fillmore West bonus cuts Captain Tapes Choice Vol. 2Captain Tapes guarantees first-quality recordings of the Grateful Dead. Each show is selected for sound quality and performance. You can be sure that each volume holds a truly worthwhile performance, presenting solid evidence of a band totally unique in the rock idiom, a true musical phenomenon that reached its apex in its earlyyears.Bonus tracks are carefully curated, often including previously overlooked gems. They always add great value to the volume—in some cases being of the ‘tail that wags the dog’ variety. Each volume includes liner notes written by Capt. Tapes, a Dead Freak of 1970 vintage. This second volume, October 12, 1968, is from a 2-night Avalon Ballroom run, where Pigpen was MIA due to caring for a sick friend. The show features two sets, containing the two suites that comprised the typical Dead show in this era: “Dark Star>St. Stephen>The Eleven>{Love Light or Death Don’t Have No Mercy}” and the “That’s it for The Other One” suite, here followed by the typical “New Potato Caboose,” an extended jam, and concluding with “Feedback.”In this volume two Pigpen staples are included as bonus tracks, as he was absent from this Avalon show. “Alligator > Feedback” from Fillmore West 8-21-68 is the closest I've heard in caliber to the jam captured on Anthem of the Sun from 2-14-68. The “Love Light” from 2-28-69, from the celebrated Fillmore West run, is certainly no unknown gem. It contains the mother of all Jerry “Love Light” solos, clocking in at 9 minutes and features the band at their rockin’-out peak. From the liner notes:NINETEEN-EFFING-SIXTY-EIGHT. What a year for the band! Their most adventurous period? Anthem of the Sun, their second album, was released in July. A highly inventive, experimental—dare I say, psychedelic—effort that took jammed-out performances (mainly culled from the celebrated February 14th show at the Carousel Ballroom) into the studio, whereupon the boys unleashed their tripped-out imaginations. Phil is fond of recounting how they drove the Warner Brothers studio overseer into such fits of despair that he eventually pulled out in disgust. Anthem is a psychedelic masterpiece that has stood the test of time. Also, in September, a month before this performance, they began recording their next album, Aoxomoxoa, a studio effort that would include the enduring classics “St. Stephen” and “China Cat Sunflower,” along with the wildly experimental track, “What’s Become of the Baby.”Captain Tapes would love to regale you with eyewitness observations about this show—but alas!—this show pre-dates my boarding the bus by a good two years. This recording first surfaced in 1975 when FM “underground” radio station KSAN reached into its archives and broadcast a weekend of live tapes of San Francisco bands from the magical years, calling the event, “What was that?” I was one among many who put my cassette recorder on high alert throughout that weekend and snagged a copy of this show, along with various other nuggets. Later, the original source soundboard found its way into the trading pool. It’s a true gem; an outstanding show in pristine sound quality and mix.At the time it was especially notable because it included a snapshot of “DarkStar” before the one captured for Live Dead, an album that monopolized more than its share of time on many a Dead Freak’s turntable. In this era, “Dark Star” was followed by “St. Stephen,” then “The Eleven,” and concluded with either “Love Light” or “Death Don’t Have No Mercy”. As Pigpen was absent from the two October Avalon shows, “Death Don’t…” is the choice. Coming four-plus months before the version from the album, this “Dark Star” had not yet matured into its canonical form as exemplified by Live Dead’sversion. Nonetheless, it has its revelatory moments. Check out the passage that begins around the 8’53” mark. …Disc 1 / Set 11. Morning Dew2. Captain Trips’ instructions3. Dark Star >4. St. Stephen >5.
