This knife is not made using Kasumi (a combination of carbon steel and soft iron), but instead made entirely from a single material as a Honyaki. The manufacturer that made this knife has already gone out of business, so the exact blade material is unknown, but it is probably SK carbon steel. By the way, the "Kiku" in Kikuo refers to the chrysanthemum flower used in the Japanese Imperial family’s crest. Knives with this engraving are generally of good quality, with only a few exceptions, but this knife is so old that the original retail price is unknown. Since the manufacturer has gone out of business, the details are unclear. It could potentially be a very expensive knife, but I personally don’t think it's that high-priced. Even if this knife were sold as new in the U.S., the price would likely be under $100. This knife was sharpened not by me, but by a Japanese knife enthusiast using a whetstone. It cuts well, and the handle is new; however, as shown in the last photo, there is a slight distortion along the blade edge. I considered correcting this distortion, but since there is also no urasuki, I decided to sell it as is. Therefore, it has a low rating, but it should be fine for slicing. ・What is the meaning of the characters engraved on the blades? On the right side of the blade, five characters are engraved, although part of them is fading. The two characters arranged horizontally mean "registration," while the three characters arranged vertically mean "Sakai Kikuo." By the way, the "O" means "king." It's an impressive name that translates to "King of Chrysanthemums," but based on my sharpening experience, I don’t feel that this knife is particularly high-priced. ・What is Sakai Kikuo? Since this company has already gone out of business, I was unable to obtain any information. I check the Japanese used market daily, but this is the first time I have seen a knife labeled "Sakai Kikuo. ・Who I would recommend this knife to. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a used Yanagiba knife that is ready to use as soon as it arrives. Maintenance will require a whetstone.
