JOHANN GEORG (CHEVALIER DE) HULSEMANN - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 05/24/1857 - HFSID 305573 JOHANN GEORG HULSEMANN (CHEVALIER DE) Handwritten letter from the Austrian Minister in Washington, 7 years after his famous duel of words with Daniel Webster Autograph Letter signed: "Hulsemann", 1 page, 4½x7. At sea off Liverpool, 1857 May 24. To [illegible name] of Philadelphia", "My Dear Sir", in full: "As we approach the end of our voyage on board this [?] steamer Africa, I wish you will be so good as to remember among your ship's crew and passengers your obedient servant". Johann Georg Hulsemann (d. 1864), generally known by his honorific, Chevalier Hulsemann, was Austria's Minister to the United States from the 1840s to 1863. In 1850, he was involved in a famous diplomatic exchange with US Secretary of State Daniel Webster. US President Zachary Taylor had recognized the government of Hungarian revolutionary Lajos Kossuth, who was seeking full independence from Austria. Chevalier Hulsemann responded with a curt - even insulting - statement, accusing the US of "ignorance" and of "spreading mendacious rumors". He warned that "American policy would be exposed to acts of retaliation." Instead of attempting to mollify Austria, Secretary of State Webster replied with a vigorous defense of US support for liberty throughout the world, comparing Kossuth's rebellion to the American struggle for independence from Britain. Kossuth, his revolt suppressed, was invited to the US, where he addressed Congress and toured the country to great fanfare. (Abraham Lincoln led the welcoming celebration in Springfield, Illinois.) In response, Hulsemann was recalled to Vienna. He later returned to his post, however, serving in Washington until shortly before his death. He negotiated an extradition treaty between the US and Austria in 1856. Lightly toned. Ink smeared. Normal mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
