Most people are familiar with the classic starting and stalling problems that these pumps had. This is caused by the governor flex ring failing. This flex ring gets hard and breaks up into what looks like coffee grounds and plugs the return connector which causes the tractor to stall. Other symptoms of a bad flex ring are loss of power, surging, or lack of throttle response. As a remedy Stanadyne came out with an EID weight cage. This cage does away with the flex ring and replaces it with internal rubber buffers. This is a permanent solution to the problematic original design. Most shops won't install the new style cage because it ensures you will be needing another rebuild in the near future. With todays dryer fuel combined with the fact that these old tractors typically are not ran every day, we have seen these fail within 2 years or being replaced.
