In 1986, he studied in London as an Agency for Cultural Affairs overseas research artist and represented Japan at the Venice Biennale in 1988, where his work received acclaim. He also exhibited at the São Paulo Biennale and later, in 1992, at Documenta IX in Germany and the Sydney Biennale. In 2006, he introduced the androgynous statue "Sphinx Floating in the Forest."
