Lawrence, also known as Lawrence of Arabia, from 1917 to 1921. These stamps are not just pieces of mail; they are a celebration of artistry and history. In 1916 the Grand Sherif of Mecca declared the Sanjak of Hejaz independent of Turkish rule.  In 1925, Ibn Saud, then Sultan of the Nejd, captured the Hejaz after a prolonged siege of Jedda, the last Hejaz stronghold.  The resulting Kingdom of the Hejaz and Nejd was renamed Saudi Arabia in 1932. Overprinted series on panel. The panel comprises a December 1921 postage stamp set of six (green quarter piastre, yellow eighth piastre, brown one para, red two piastres, blue one piastre, orange half piastre) and a 1917 postage due set of three (red two piastres, blue one piastre, orange 20 paras), all overprinted “1340 Hashemite Kingdom 1340” in Arabic. The stamps are mounted and franked.   This set of 9 stamps is the first issue of Hejaz and is canceled on a panel with the Moslem date 1340 (1921). Scott #L1   1916 ½ piastre green- Sherifate of Mecca – the design is adapted from carved door panels of Mosque El Salih Talay, Cairo Scott #L4   1916-1917 ½ piastre orange – The central design is adapted from a Koran design for a tomb. The background is from stone carving on the entrance arch to the Ministry of Wakfs. Scott #L5   1916-1917 1 piastre Lilac brown – The design is adapted from Stucco Work above the entrance to Cairo Railroad Station Scott #L?   1917 2 piastre orange – The design was adapted from the first page of the Koran of Sultan Farag. Scott #L3   1916 1 piastre blue – The design was taken from the details of an ancient Prayer Niche in the Mosque of El Amri at Qus in Upper Egypt. Scott #L2   1916 ½ piastre red – taken from a page on the Koran in Mosque of El Sultan Barquq, Cairo. The last three stamps are 1917 postage-due set of three (red two piastres, blue one piastre, orange 20 paras). History of this set: After Hussein declared independence in June 1916, Ottoman postage stamps were obsolete in the Hejaz. Lawrence suggested that they issue a new, distinctive series of stamps that would be one way of publicizing the emergence of a new nation. Over the coming months, the Arab Bureau and the Survey of Egypt collaborated on the project. Choosing suitable illustrations fell to Lawrence and Ronald Storrs” (Wilson 96). In a memorandum to the Sherif, Lawrence noted that “the design should in wording, spirit, and ornament be, as far as possible, representative and reminiscent of a purely Arab source and inspiration”. Lawrence was fascinated by the project, even at one stage suggesting that different flavor gums would help to distinguish their value in the dark. This idea was abandoned as impractical. (reference: Sotheby’s) *Thomas Edward Lawrence CB DSO (16 August 1888 – 19 May 1935) was a British archaeologist, army officer, diplomat, and writer who became renowned for his role in the Arab Revolt (1916–1918) and the Sinai and Palestine Campaign (1915–1918) against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. The breadth and variety of his activities and associations, and his ability to describe them vividly in writing, earned him international fame as Lawrence of Arabia, a title used for the 1962 film based on his wartime activities.
