Description: You are bidding on an original “Unissued "Soviet Army SSh - 68 steel helmet. Dated 1981 ". The SSh -68 was the last of the Soviet steel helmets issued for general use. The SSh-68 was developed to improve the ballistic protection of the then standard Soviet helmet design, the SSh-40. The SSh-68 features a high dome and was given the unflattering nickname of The Conehead, from the Saturday Night Live characters of the same name. Curiously, the first examples of the SSh-68 the West acquired was during the Grenada Intervention in 1983. The Soviet SSh-68 was widely used in the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and is still seen today in the war in Ukraine although it has generally been replaced with ballistic helmets in front line Russian units. The SSh-68 (despite it's Western nickname) is an elegant helmet with a distinctive high dome profile and flared rim. The liner is suspended by 4 pins towards the top of the dome. The front rim has a year and serial / lot number stamped onto the underside. There are the original Soviet stamps inside the helmet. It is marked with the Size P-1 and the year of production, which appears to be 1981 but is lightly stamped, and some manufacturing codes. It has an adjustable liner and leather chinstrap with a buckle closure There are also artificial leather pads used to cushion the liner suspension. The Soviet SSh-68 helmet shells are uniformly larger sized due to the fact the Russians wore their winter caps (ushankas) as padding under the helmet in cold weather. This SSh-68 is about as nice as they come. Total mint and unissued, This helmet is in the U.S., so you do not have to worry about lengthy and unknown delivery times from overseas sources.
