Otto pursued his hobby diligently, taking care to obtain the right angle, lighting and composition. He went undaunted to mainline or backwoods shortline, often driving his faithful Ford over miles of dusty unimproved roads to capture a prized scene. Today interest in railroad photography is widespread, but during much of Otto's time only a relative handful of photographers were pursuing the iron horse. He was one of a small group of hardy pioneers who preserved a record of railroad operations on film for us to study and enjoy today. Otto was interested in all aspects of railroading as his collection reflects; from the narrow gauges of his own Colorado to big steam across the West, branch lines to the 20th Century Limited. In addition to steam, he was on hand for the first runs of the new diesel trains, such as the Chiefs, Zephyrs and Streamliners , and he might be found snapping electrics and even an occasional motorbus or truck. Following Otto's death his collection was placed in the Denver Public Library, Western History Department where a group of dedicated volunteers under the direction of R. H. Kindig (himself a noted railroad photographer) carefully catalogued the collection of their friend and fellow photographer. Today the task is complete and in conjunction with the Library, this representative selection of over 500 photos including the finest of Otto's work, has been published in one superb volume which covers over 75 different railroads. The Colorado Railroad Museum and the Denver Public Library are proud to offer this work as a unique contribution to American transportation history. All pictures are of the actual item.
