Description: Product Listing - Paul Jacoulet The Complete Woodblock Prints Description Paul Jacoulet The Complete Woodblock Prints A collection of all woodblock prints by Paul Jacoulet, an unusual painter and printmaker who was born in Paris at the end of the 19th century and spent most of his life in Japan. Paul Jacoulet was born in Paris in 1896 and came to Japan at the age of three, and spent most of his life thereafter. Jacoulet established his own printmaking laboratory in the early Showa period and began producing traditional woodblock prints. As with the ukiyo-e prints of the Edo period, he produced approximately 170 woodblock prints in vivid colors in collaboration with carvers and printers. After World War II, his gorgeous woodblock prints attracted the attention of many people associated with the U.S. military, including General MacArthur of the GHQ, and retrospectives were held in various parts of Japan and the United States. This book is the first definitive collection of Jacoulet's full-color woodblock prints, marking the 60th anniversary of his death. Bilingual Japanese/English edition. About the author Paul Jacoulet Born in Paris in 1896. He came to Japan at the age of three accompanied by his father, a French teacher. He learned oil painting from Kuroda Seiki and Kume Keiichiro, and Japanese painting from Ikeda Terukata and Shoen. In 1933 (Showa 8), he established the Wakarei Printmaking Institute, and produced woodblock prints while living with a carver and printer. Until his death at the age of 64 in 1960 (Showa 35), he traveled not only domestically but also overseas, leaving behind 162 ukiyo-e prints with vivid colors.
