Description: This is an exceptional antique plate made by Brown Westhead Moore & Co. (BWM&Co.) in England, with a diamond registration impression dating it to 1875! This earthenware plate is transfer printed in a Tonquin pattern of birds and leaves scattered randomly among meandering vines. The Tonquin pattern (traditionally blue and white ceramic) is a popular Oriental design, enthusiastically collected around the world. Transferware, a style of ceramics, is a process of transfer printing--a decorative technique developed in England in the mid-18th century. The plate measures approximately 10.25" in diameter. The glossy finish shows several minor surface scratches, likely from untensilware. If you look at the gallery photos, you can see a very small part on the edge of the plate which has a blurry blue or flow blue design, which almost seems to be a misstep in the firing process rather than an intentional production design--making this an uncommon treasure! Also note in the gallery photos three very small chips on the edge of the plate, as well as minor discolorations here and there. On the backside are three minor peck marks which appear to have been made in the production process. But for a plate which is almost 150 years old, it is in beautiful shape overall and an amazing treasure! I have only seen one other comparable plate listed on eBay! back stamp: BWM & CoTonquin (the pattern)R 16495 (the registration #) Potter's Mark Impression:T.C Brown-Westhead Moore & Co(white impressions on white background) Diamond registration impression:IV (clayware)23 (day of registration)S (right-hand corner of diamond=1875 date From a smoke-free home.
