RARE! Restored Victorian Transitional Newel Post Light

Description: I’m very excited to offer this exceptional 1890’s/1900’s RESTORED victorian era, transitional style newel post fixture! This is one of the more “wow factor” newel post lights of this style I’ve had the pleasure of owning and working on - it’s quite the showstopper. Adorned with rich, finely cast foliate details, and incorporating an interesting pear shaped crisscross design which perfectly frames the opalescent teardrop “bullet” shade, this piece is playful, yet, elegant - typical of the era. This fixture was designed like a gas/electric combination light with one light facing up and one down, but there is no evidence that this particular piece was ever dual-powered. There is no gas valve, no division of the internal pipes, etc - so it is my belief that this was always an all-electric turn of the century newel, making it extra rare. This piece has a nice even patina that is reddish brown in places, and golden/brassy in others. It reads as an antique finish which has not been overly polished. The glass shades are in fantastic antique condition with no flaws of note outside of some very minor fitter-end flea bites. Both shades have some embedded particulate matter left over from the manufacturing process. They are similar in color and opalescence unlit, but they differ slightly in appearance when illuminated. The upper shade is a 4” fitter, and the lower shades is a 3 1/4” fitter. This fixture has been newly rewired while retaining the original sockets. The socket facing up is keyless, while the socket that faces down is a paddle socket, marked “D”. It operates smoothly with a nice, satisfying click. This fixture retains its original mounting foot, and is accompanied by a hand cut plywood base extension that fits under the original brass rectangular base plate. I believe this to have been made at some point to create just enough room to pass wires under the base plate for a non-hardwired application. Of note: To take the photos for this listing, I did not tighten this down one final quarter turn which would have allowed it to face forward as would be typical. The nature of installing this fixture allows it to face any way that you see fit. Some specs: - The base cover plate is 3 3/4” x 3 5/8”. Not quite a square. - 35 1/2” approximate overall height. - 8” wide at the apex of the curvature of the harp - Bottom ribbed dome piece has a couple minor dimples, hard to see. This light is mounted by first screwing the foot to the newel post of the stair, at which point the wires are to be connected. You must then tighten down the threaded brass ring directly above the ribbed dome to desired “snug” - ness and orientation.
