Description: This is a rare card with the performance schedule for the 28th and 29th weeks of the International Tour of the 20th Annual Edition of the "ZIEGFELD FOLLIES". (The Twentieth Edition opened August 16th, 1927 at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City and ran for 167 performances while simultaneously touring throughout the country and abroad.) ..... The "ZIEGFELD FOLLIES" were the most lavish musical productions on Broadway between 1907 and 1931. Blending beauty, music and talent and with over 100 graceful and elegant "Ziegfeld Girls" in priceless gowns, jewels and flowers, audiences knew they would be treated to the most memorable evening possible. The key to the ongoing success of the "Follies", even in the worst of times was producer FLORENZ ZIEGFELD, Jr. and his maddening attention to detail. Ziegfeld's business card read "Impresario Extraordinaire," and with good reason. He conceived the structure and theme for each "Follies", hiring his creative team several months before production began. He had an infuriating tendency to give his writers, designers and composers contradictory instructions, only bringing things together in the final weeks by ordering exhaustive revisions. A demanding boss, he drove himself harder than anyone else in his employ to make each of his revues an audience pleaser ..... This edition of the "Ziegfeld Follies" starred RUTH ST. DENIS and TED SHAWN with the Denishawn Dancers and included NYRA BROWN, ACE BROWN, MAYNARD VISINGARD, NELDA KINCAID, DAVID BURNS, GEORGE RICHMAN, DOROTHY ROSE, JEANETTE BROWN, LOUISE HIGHTOWER, GERTRUDE LINDLE, LILLIAN NORWOOD, SAM HOWARD, INA LEELAND, MEREDITH HOWARD, VIRGINIA HOWARD (Miss Tulsa 1927), MARGIE ROYCE, TOM LAW, NORBERT LION, FRED GOWAN, ELLEN ECKLER, LOUISE ROBINSON, DOROTHY STEVENS, MARCELLA SMYTHE, PATSY PARKER, THELMA BLAKE, BETTY SARTO, ORO PLUMMER, RUTH HOLT, MARY OHLEN, FLORENCE GRUTE, EBBA MACK, NAOMI STUART, RUBY FLICK, ELEANOR MAE, BETTY YORK, JEORDIE GRAHAM, ADELE WILSON, MYRL LONG, HELEN McDONOUGH, MARGO YOUNG, PATRICIA BARTEAU, MILDRED ARMBRISTER, BILLY BLYTHE, PAULINE REDD, AGNES FANNING, MARION OLIN, BETTY BLANCHE, ERNESTINE DAY, RONNIE JOYCE, ESTELLE DENNIS, GERTRUDE GERRISH, JANE SHERMAN, ANNA AUSTIN, GEORGE STEARES, DEMETROIS VILAN, LUCILLE KLICK, HARRIET SMITH, KATHLEEN JENKINS, HELEN LOVE, DAVONIS BURNS, TESSIE LAW, ANNIE BROWN, FRIEDA GOWAN, HOLLIS MORET, MITZI HAYES, DOROTHY JENKINS, LA BELLE FANNING and JOEY BOHN ..... Biographical Note: TED SHAWN is inexorably linked to the beginning of the modern dance movement in the United States. From 1914 to 1930 he worked with RUTH ST. DENIS, first as a student and shortly afterward as both dance partner and husband. Together they founded the Denishawn Schools, which generated such eminent talents as Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, and Agnes de Mille. St. Denis and Shawn toured extensively as partners and appeared frequently as a principal attraction of the "Ziegfeld Follies". Their choreography was highly eclectic, with a penchant for mysticism, religion, the Orient, and ethnicity. Though they remained close friends and confidants throughout their lives, St. Denis and Shawn separated in 1931. Shawn purchased a farm in the Berkshire hills of Massachusetts, converted the barn into a studio, and began recruiting the athletic young men he taught at Springfield College for participation in an all-male dance company. He was the first choreographer to form such a troupe. His goals were to improve both the image of men in dance and the audiences' understanding of dance as an art. Beginning in 1933 Shawn and His Men Dancers toured every state in the Union as well as Canada, Cuba, and England. Playing everything from vaudeville houses to gymnasiums and private clubs, the company endured this arduous touring schedule for seven consecutive years from late fall until spring, when they would return to their home base, the Pillow, to begin preparing for a new season.
