Description: [ANTE-FIRE IMPRINTS] [HAND-COLORED MAPS] Cornell's Primary Geography, Forming Part First of a Systematic Series of School Geographies Author: CORNELL, S. S. Title: [ANTE-FIRE IMPRINTS] [HAND-COLORED MAPS] Cornell's Primary Geography, Forming Part First of a Systematic Series of School Geographies Publication: Chicago: S. C. Griggs & Co., 1857 Description: Hardcover. Small quarto, 96pp., illustrated. A very good or better copy in the publisher's printed boards with black leather spine. Internally lovely, without even a whisper of foxing, and with the hand-colored maps quite vibrant. Gentle rubbing and scuffing to boards and extremities. Rather curious--OCLC lists Cornell's Primary Geography as an Appleton (New York) imprint, and indeed Appleton's name is printed on the cover of this volume. However the title pages gives us the imprint of S. C. Griggs of Chicago, and the date of 1857, well over a decade before the Great Fire. OCLC does list two holdings of the Chicago imprint, at Harvard and, of all places, the British Library. Thus not apparently retained by any Chicago institutions, nor by AAS. The first edition, published by Appleton, appears to have been published in 1854. Byrd's bibliography does list a dozen or so volumes from this publisher (Griggs), but not this volume. It is likewise absent from McMurtrie's list of Ante-Fire Imprints. Notably, the publisher's address of 111 Lake Street (and, crucially, their 1871 home around the corner, at 117-119 State Street), were in the middle of the conflagration, and presumably most of their in-house inventory was a total loss. Aside from being a scarce Chicago pre-fire imprint, the volume represents a nice series of straighforward maps of the world (including a full-spread map of the United States in 1857, on the eve of the Civil War and with the Western borders very much in flux. Despite gentle rubbing and scuffing to boards, it's hard to imagine a copy in more pleasing condition internally. Very good +.
