POLK - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 06/11/1857 - HFSID 265269 SARAH C. POLK The First Lady writes a note to an admirer of her husband, President James K. Polk. Autograph letter signed: "Mrs. James K. Polk", 1p, 4x7. Polk Place, Nashville, Tennessee, 1857 June 11. To Mr. Geo. M. Towle. In full: "I will take pleasure to send to you an Autograph letter of my lamented Husband, as soon as I can select one suitable. The calls on me for Autographs, has been so numerous, that I now find it difficult to furnish them. Very respectfully." On January 1, 1824, 28-year-old James K. Polk married 20-year-old Sarah Childress. They had no children. Mrs. Polk was helpful to her husband during his political career, serving as his secretary. Polk, exhausted after his one term as President, did not seek reelection. The Polks retired to their home, Polk Place, in downtown Nashville. Recurring attacks of cholera and continual work, including conducting the Mexican War, left him weak, and he died June 15, 1849, just 103 days after leaving the White House. At 53, he is the youngest U.S. President to die of natural causes. Sarah Childress Polk (1803-1891), a widow at 45, spent the next 42 years devoted to preserving her husband's memory and working for the Presbyterian Church. She even signed her name as her husband's wife rather than her own name. During the Civil War, Sarah refused to leave Polk Place and it was unofficially known to be neutral ground. She received both Union and Confederate Generals at her home. Although she survived her husband by over 42 years, Mrs. Polk's autograph is scarce in any form, especially letters. Lightly creased. Light, sporadic pinhead-size stains at blank areas. Folds, vertical fold touches the "M" of Mrs. Overall, fine condition. See more material from these signers: FIRST LADY SARAH C.
