Description: Silvertone model 7038 Antique 1941 tube radio repaired AM /SW auxiliary input. Great radio fully Recapped, and all except 1 resistor replaced. ( see photos) 4 new old stock tubes were inserted especially for the output. Gets great AM and SW 2 reception. Doesn’t seem to be much on SW1 band. The front escutcheon is a bit warped and has a crack in one place. The plaskon they used back then was very subject to warping and compared to some this is not to bad. There are pushbuttons that supposedly can be pre-set to some stations but could not figure it out and the available documentation does not have the setup instructions. The pushbuttons are a bit bent on their shafts but if you would glue them in maybe they would be more straightened out. I have left the pushbuttons loose on their shafts. THere is a Bass Boost button that works perfectly. In is flat and out is boosted Bass. The 6x9’ field coil speaker puts out about 5 watts of power ( ONLY 2 small cracks that i repaired ) . Bass is excellent very little distortion I have supplied a knob as seen in the photo to change the band switch . The original knob I attempted to repair but it only slips not having a flat spot inside the spindle. I will supply both knobs and leave the one that works on the radio and the original in a bag separately with the schematics. ( photo) The auxiliary input. I thoroughly tested with my iPhone and have supplied a stereo to mono converting 3.5mm to RCA JACK Converter so you do NOT need to switch the source to Mono just plug in your phone, turn volume up on the phone and select aux. on the switch in back of the radio. The cabinet was in horrible shape. I went over the top by stripping it and then adding some stain and then lacquer 2 coats. The rest of the cabinet was rubbed with “Finish restore” liquid. Looks half decent now. ( See photos) The original grille cloth was yucky so i installed some period grille cloth from a salvaged other radio of the same time period. Looks great! The dial is original but i have added LED bulbs for clarity. Reception is excellent with the built in loop antenna which i have added color coded leads to match the point of connection colors. SW band 1 seems to have very little on it but SW2 has lots of stations that were pulled in. Sound is loud on this radio and it has 3 different tone settings with the ON/Off switch. The cord has been replaced with a polarized safety cord and is plenty long, and i have added a stained plywood backing to protect the insides and allowing for plenty of ventilation. (See photos). THE PHOTO WITH THE 6X9” SPEAKER showing IS A BEFORE REPAIR PHOTO radio was very dirty. This is a very heavy radio (25 pounds ) so shipping will be steep unfortunately. Will be properly bubble wrapped multiple layers in a strong box. I added local pickup in case someone wishes to come to South Eastern Massachusetts.
