Description: It began in 1982, when Timothy Mellon purchased The Maine Central, The Boston & Maine, and The Delaware & Hudson, creating a major Northeast system. Unfortunately, the potential was never realized, when labor/management conflicts led to bankruptcy on The D&H. The Maine Central and B&M continued on as Guilford Transportation Industries, under labor rules of the tiny Springfield Terminal RR. Tight clearances and economics led to a shift of most traffic to Conrail, Leaving Guilford tracks west of Ayer Jct. almost empty. In 1999, CSX and The NS split up Conrail. With backing from the NS, which wanted to compete for Northeast business, the new Guilford Rail System raised clearances on Hoosac Tunnel, and improved track. Soon traffic returned to GRS lines west of Ayer. This video focuses on this renewed stretch of track between Ayer Jct. & Rotterdam Jct. You'll see action from many popular locations, featuring Guilford's unique stable of secondhand motive power!
