OCR scan from the back of the frame: The "F" unit style of locomotive depicted in these paintings was manufactured by General Motors Electro-Motive Division from 1939-1960. The locomotives were assembled in La Grange, Illinois, and London, Ontario. The original model was an FT and the final was the F9. The F unit was one of the most successful of the diesel locomotive designs with over 7000 units sold, and it hastened the end of the steam era. Originally intended for freight service, the "Covered Wagons" quickly became the main power for passenger trains. The Great Northern locomotive, F3 #356C was built in December of 1947. It lead such well- known passenger trains as The Empire Builder, The Western Star, and the International among others. The F7 Santa Fe locomotive was manufactured in 1949. The 347C powered El Capitan, The Chief, and The Super Chief. The Northern Pacific 6702C, an F9, was built in 1958. It had 1750 horsepower, 250 more than the F3 and F7. The NP passenger trains included The North Coast Limited and The Mainstreeter. In 1970 GN and NP, along with Spokane, Portland and Seattle, and Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, merged to form Burlington Northern. The BN ran a green colored passenger train, often referred to as the hockey stick paint scheme. Amtrak took over American passenger service in the early 1970s and ran a kaleidoscope of merged railroad passenger equipment until the color scheme was standardized.
