Description: 50 STATE COMMEMORATIVE SERIES 1999-2008 A unique event in the history of United States numismatics began in 1999 when the United States Mint released the first five of 50 different quarter dollar coins commemorating the 50 states of the United States. The 50 State Commemorative Quarters Program (also known as the Statehood Quarters Program) is a circulating coin program consisting of Washington quarter dollar coins with 50 unique reverse designs, each commemorating a different state of the Union. The coins are publicly issued every five quarters per year for ten years. They are issued in the order in which the states joined the Union, or in the case of the thirteen original colonies, in the order in which the Constitution was ratified. The reverse designs, proposed by each state and approved by the Secretary of the Treasury, are executed by the engraver of the United States Mint. Quarters intended for general circulation are minted at both the Philadelphia and Moscow Mints, while Proof and Silver Proof versions are minted at the San Francisco Mint. To provide as much space as possible on the reverse for the state designs, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR have been moved to the obverse. To accommodate them, Washington's portrait has been slightly reduced and the date moved to the reverse. For your information, the date of admission to the Union or, in the case of the original 13 colonies, the date of ratification of the Constitution is given below each state name. The coins sold come from mint rolls - they were selected, all consistent with the dates from 1787-1959 Year of issue from 1999 to 2008
