Condition: poor, cracks, shrinkage, age deterioration, discoloration, wear, color loss, nicks, dents, bakelite material, cue ball is off white color as a result of age. The cracks and shrinkage in the billiard balls is a result of oxidation, drying, and gasing off of the nitrocellulose/camphor compound over the many years and the shrinkage of the molecular structure within the compound. Condition is poor, collectors item. In about 1865, John Wesley Hyatt of Albany, New York acquired British chemist Alexander Parkes's 1855 patent for Parkesine, an early polymer, made of nitrocellulose, oil and other compounds. Parkes built a business around the new material, the first industrial plastic, but failed by 1868. Hyatt began experimenting with cellulose nitrate with the intention of manufacturing billiard balls, which until that time were in the upper class, were principally made from ivory. Hyatt developed a compound to manufacture a replacement for the ivory ball. Hyatt formed the Albany Billiard Ball Company, in Albany, New York's South End in 1868. Hyatt received a patent on the nitrocellulose recipe in 1869. In 1870, John and his brother Isaiah developed an advanced material with the inclusion of nitrocellulose and camphor coupled with an inorganic clay compound utilized in the manufacture dental replacements along with the billiard ball. Isaiah Hyatt called their new material: Celluloid in 1872. It was put to use by the Albany Billiard Ball Company and its sister company, Albany Dental Plate Co. Albany's celluloid-based composite material pool balls dominated the US market until the 1960s, when the increased availability of cheap, imported balls caused a decline in the company which later became the Albany–Hyatt Billiard Ball Company in September 1977. It was the last remaining US-based major billiard ball manufacturer. By the early 1980s, Albany was using the newer, superior phenolic resin, like their Belgium-based competitor Saluc. Albany–Hyatt went out of business in 1986. The other billiard balls (ball numbers: 9,10,12, and two cue balls are made of special recipe phenolic resin by Aramith. Billiard ball diameter: 2-1/4". Condition: good, marks, fading, as a result of age. Aramith model that is made by now known Saluc S.A. which is a Belgian speciality manufacturing company. Founded in 1923, they are best known for their Aramith brand billiard balls, and are the manufacturer under license of the Brunswick Centennial pool ball line. The company also manufactures other sorts of balls and bearings with high engineering tolerances for a wide variety of industrial and consumer-product applications. On March 5, 2007, Armand Capital Group, parent company of Saluc, purchased the C. L. Bailey Co. of Marionville, Missouri. They also established new warehousing and office space for their precision ball division, entering the United States industrial ball industry. Belgium-based Saluc utilizes a newer, superior phenolic resin. For several decades Belgian Aramith Billiard balls have enjoyed a legendary reputation for outstanding endurance and uncompromised quality. Used by over 85% of players worldwide, they are recognized as the reference of the industry. Originally Made by Saluc in Belgium, Aramith excellence is the result of a high-tech process that combines the unmatched characteristics of Aramith resin with fine Belgian craftsmanship. Their consistently reliable performance guarantees players the pleasure of razor-sharp precision. Their exceptionally long product life offers the table owner the lowest ball cost on an annual basis. That is how Aramith for almost half a century gained its legendary reputation as signature for true and unrivalled quality. The Aramith special phenolic resin features excellent physical and chemical characteristics. In addition, the billiard market was in full expansion. Commercialization of the first balls started in the sixties at a time when competition against three already well-established manufacturers was difficult. Through the continuous fine-tuning of quality and the increase of production levels, Aramith Saluc succeeded to take a major competitive lead. After Hyatt Ball, Raschig and Composition Billiard Balls all stuck with old technology finally ended their billiard ball production, Saluc became the only company worldwide producing phenolic resin billiard balls, exporting over 99% of its production to more than 100 countries. Contrary to polyester and other phenolic resins, the Aramith resin that Saluc uses has been specifically designed for the billiard application and is produced within the company in its own chemical plant. This unique technology leads to a material especially suitable, with unmatched characteristics such as its chip and scratch resistance. The Aramith balls last up to five times longer than other balls made of polyester. Their unique structure, more than one hundred times finer than mineral-filled polyester, gives the Aramith balls their specific reactivity and allows them to hold their high-gloss polish over time, resulting in minimal ball and table cloth wear.
