Description: Proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research, May 1901 Author: James, William, et al. Title: Proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research, May 1901 Publication: London: R. Brimley Johnson, 1901 Description: Wraps. 8.5 x 5.5 inches, softcover, good with wear, discoloration and spottiness to wraps. 36 pp with inserted gravure photo of F. W. H. Myers; the entire issue is devoted to eulogies for Myers by Oliver Lodge, William James ("Frederic Myers's Service to Psychology"), Charles Richet, Frank Podmore, and Walter Leaf. Frederic William Henry Myers (1843-1901) was a British poet, classicist, philologist, and a founder of the Society for Psychical Research. Myers' work on psychical research and his ideas about a "subliminal self" were influential in his time, but dismissed in large part by the academic community until in 2007, when a team of cognitive scientists at University of Virginia School of Medicine, led by Edward F. Kelly published a major empirical-theoretical work, Irreducible Mind, citing various empirical evidence that they think broadly corroborates Myer's conception of human self and its survival of bodily death.
